Creating Interactive Quizzes
from Blackboard/Kaltura Videos

CAUTION

DCCCD WILL BE MOVING TO A NEW STREAMING VIDEO SYSTEM AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SPRING 2019 SEMESTER. QUIZZES ADDED TO VIDEOS IN KALTURA MAY NOT WORK IN THE NEW STREAMING SYSTEM.

You can add interactive quiz questions to your videos.

Students are prompted to answer the questions as part of the viewing experience, and you can then analyze student engagement and their understanding of the content through analytic reports or in the Blackboard Gradebook.


1Create a Quiz

In your MY MEDIA gallery, select Add New (in the upper right corner). From the drop-down menu, select Video Quiz.


2Select Your Video

Locate the video you want to use and choose Select to the far right.

The Quiz Editor window will open. To create a quiz, select the Start button.

4Quiz Set Up

On the left side of the Quiz Editor, you will now see three menus: Details, Scores, and Experience.

  1. Details:
    1. Quiz Name: Type in the name of your quiz.
    2. Welcome Message: Type in a short message that the students will see before they watch the video. We suggest that you instruct the students that grades for all quizzes WILL NOT be recorded until they select the “Submit” button that will appear at the end of the video.
    3. Allow Download of Questions List: Check the box if you want students to be able to download all quiz questions BEFORE they start the video.
    4. Instructions: Check this box to make sure the following message is displayed “All Questions must be answered. The quiz will be submitted at the end.”
  2. Scores:
    1. Do Not Show Scores: Select this option if you want the students to NOT see their scores on the quiz after they submit their responses.
    2. Show Scores: Select this if option if you want the students to see their scores when they submit their responses.
    3. Include Answers: Check this box if you want the student to be able to see the CORRECT answers after they submit their responses.
  3. Experience:
    1. Allow Answer Changes: Check this box if you want to allow students to change an answer before submitting the quiz.
    2. Allow Skip: Select this if you want to allow your students to skip a question and come back to answer it later.
    3. Do Not Allow Skip: Select this option if you DO NOT want your students to skip a question and come back to answer it later.

5Question Types

You can add your questions throughout the video or you can add all of your questions at the end of the video. You can choose from three questions types: Multiple Choice, True/False, and Reflection Point.


6Adding Questions

Here's how to add questions:

  1. Start by playing the video.
  2. Pause the video where you want to add a question.
  3. The question will be added at a sepcific time in the video, marked with the quiz box icon.(See graphic on the left.)
  4. For Multiple Choice questions:
    1. Type in the question in the Add a Question Here box.
    2. Type in the correct answer in the Add the Correct Answer Here box (Note: There can be only one correct answer).
    3. Type in an incorrect answer in the Add Additional Answer Here box.
    4. Select the + icon to add more incorrect answers.
    5. Select the shuffle icon in the upper left corner of the player so the correct answer isn’t always at the top.
    6. Select the light bulb icon in the upper right corner of the player to add hints and explanations.
    7. Select the Hint icon to add a hint to help the student.
    8. Select the Why icon to explain why the correct answer is indeed correct.
    9. Select Save when you’re finished.
    10. Select Delete to start over.

  1. For True/False questions:
    1. Type in the question in the Add a Question Here box.
    2. Select the green check mark or red X to determine the correct answer (Note: There can be only one correct answer).
    3. Select the light bulb icon in the upper right corner of the player to add hints and explanations.
    4. elect the Hint icon to add a hint to help the student.
    5. Select the Why icon to explain why the correct answer is indeed correct.
    6. Select Save when you’re finished.
    7. Select Delete to start over.

  1. For Reflection Points:
    1. Type in the text in the Add reflection text point here box.
    2. Select Save when you’re finished.
    3. Select Delete to start over.
    4. The reflection point text will appear at the point you designate in the video. Students should select Continue to resume playing the video.

9Quiz Complete

Once you’ve completed creating your quiz, select the "Done" button in the upper right corner of the Quiz Editor.


10Preview the Quiz

You can now Preview your quiz by selecting the "eye icon" located in the lower right corner of the video player. If you need to make changes to the quiz, select the "Edit Quiz" button located in the upper right corner of the video player. Select one of the box icons on the timeline to edit a quiz. Select "Close" to save your changes. The select "Done" when you’re finished.

11Adding the Interactive Video Quiz to Your Course

Follow these steps to add the interactive video quiz to your course: https://dlc.dcccd.edu/streamingupdate/#topic10

Once in place, students will see the "Welcome" message before the video begins to play.

12Taking the Quiz

The numbered blocks on the video scroll bar, as shown in the graphic, mark the placement of the questions within the video as it plays.

Students MUST allow the video to play through to the end even if the last question resides at the midway point.

13Quiz Submission

When the scroll bar reaches the end of the video, the "Completed" message will appear. Students can "Review" their answers and then MUST press the "Submit" button for the scores to appear in the Blackboard Gradebook.

Students will see their video quiz score if you’ve selected this option in the "Scores" setting of the "Quiz Editor".

14The Gradebook

  1. Once the student has successfully completed the video quiz AND pressed the "Submit" button at the end of the video, the quiz scores will automatically be entered into the Blackboard Gradebook feature.
  2. To view the submission and the scores entered into the Gradebook, go to the "Course Management" panel, open the "Grade Center" and select "Full Grade Center".
  3. Look for the student’s name or the name of the quiz in the Grade Center columns to confirm a proper Gradebook entry. (see bottom graphic)
