Using Video in Blackboard

YuJa Enterprise Video Platform

On September 4th, 2018, the DCCCD Board of Trustees approved the YuJa Enterprise Video Platform as the sole provider for video streaming services within our District for the next five years. The decision was made after a competitive review process, including responses to a Request for Proposal (RFP) from four major vendors.

The YuJa cloud-hosted video platform, a proven higher-education video solution, will integrate with DCCCD's existing Blackboard learning management system (LMS). The comprehensive video workflow includes lecture capture, video management, live streaming, flipped classes, video assessments, and student and faculty recording from any web browser or mobile device and more.

Later this month, we will announce a timeline and implementation plan for migrating media from Kaltura and Stream It to YuJa prior to the beginning of the Spring 2019 semester. This will also include updating links to videos already in Blackboard courses. Training will be available later this Fall so faculty and staff can learn about all the exciting new features in the YuJa Enterprise Video Platform.

The step-by-step guide outlined below refers to the current Kaltura video management system. As we transition to the YuJa Enterprise Video Platform, a new set of instructions will replace these.

Using the cloud-based, Kaltura video management system integrated into Blackboard, you can view, upload, search, publish, and share videos without ever leaving the Blackboard environment. The video system is available to anyone with a Blackboard account, including DCCCD faculty, students and staff.

The screenshots you’ll see in this guide were taken on an iMac desktop computer. While the user interface may differ somewhat on your computer or mobile device, the functionality remains the same.

Using the integrated Blackboard video system is simple and easy. To get you oriented quickly, here are some step-by-step instructions that cover these topics:

Accessing Videos in Blackboard

You can access all of your videos through My Media, your personal video repository in Blackboard. Just follow these steps:

  • Login to Blackboard
  • On the eCampus home page, look for the My Media module in the upper left corner.
  • Select My Media.  A new screen, known as your gallery, will open displaying all the videos you’ve uploaded to Blackboard. You can filter, search, sort, add new and delete videos from your My Media gallery.

Uploading Videos to Blackboard

To upload videos to your My Media gallery, follow these steps:

**Note: Parameters to observe:

  • File size: 2000 mg (2 GB) - MAXIMUM
  • Video Length: 6 minutes or less to maximize viewership. If necessary, not more than 15 minutes.
  1. Select My Media from the eCampus home page to open your video collection.
  2. From the My Media gallery, select Add New > Media Upload.

  3. The Upload Media window will appear. Select Choose a file to upload.

  4. Search for and select the video file you want to upload from your computer or mobile device. You can upload multiple videos at the same time. All videos should be in the mp4 (H.264) format.

  5. A Progress Bar will let you know when your upload is complete.

  6. Fill in the following information details:
    1. The Name of your video.
    2. A short Description of the your video.
    3. Type in any Tags associated with the content of your video. Existing tags in the system will pop-up as you type in a tag.
  7. When your finished, select Save. The system will notify you that Your changes have been saved.
  8. All videos in your My Media gallery are automatically Private, so only you can view them, until you choose to publish or share them.

Editing Video Information

If you need to change your video’s name, description or tags, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your My Media gallery and locate the video you want to edit.
  2. Select the Edit Icon on the right side of the screen (it looks like a pencil).

  3. In the Edit window, select Details.

  4. You can now type in new information in the Name, Description and Tags fields.
  5. When you are finished with your changes, select Save.

Selecting Video Thumbnails

You have several options if you want to change the thumbnail image displayed in the video player:

  1. Go to your My Media gallery and locate the video you want to change.
  2. Select the Edit Icon on the right side of the screen.

  3. In the Edit window, select Thumbnails. You can have three options for creating and selecting thumbnail images:

    1. The Upload Thumbnail button let’s you choose an image file from your computer or mobile device to use as thumbnail.
    2. You can use the video player to find the frame you’d like to use as your thumbnail, and then select the frame by using the Capture button.
    3. Selecting the Auto-Generate button will open a pop-up window with ten thumbnails you can choose from. Just select one of the images to create a new thumbnail.
  4. Once you’ve selected a thumbnail, you can download the image to your computer or mobile device by selecting the Download button.

Replacing an Existing Video with a New Video

If you need to replace an existing video with a new video file, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your My Media gallery and locate the video you want to change.
  2. Select the Edit Icon on the right side of the screen.

  3. In the Edit window, select Replace Video.

  4. Select the Choose a file to upload button.
  5. Search for and select the new video file you want to upload from your computer or mobile device. All videos should be in the mp4 (H.264) format.
  6. A Progress Bar will let you know when your upload is complete.

  7. To save the new video upload, select Approve Replacement.

Creating Automated Closed Captions

You can use the automated closed captioning system to add caption titles to your video. Just follow these steps:

  1. Go to your My Media gallery and locate the video you want to add closed captions. Select the video to open it in a new screen.

  2. Beneath the video player, select Actions > Order Captions.

  3. To start the process, select the Order Captions button.

  4. Once the process begins, you will see this message: Thank you! Your caption request has been received. Captions will be automatically uploaded to your vide upon completion. Select OK.

  5. Select Actions > Caption Requests to see a table beneath the video player that will notify you on the Status of the automated captions. You will need to refresh your browser to update the Status.

  6. Closed captions are available once the Status column changes from Pending to Complete. As stated above, remember to refresh your browser to update the Status column.

Editing Automated Closed Captions

The automated closed captions generated in the Blackboard video system will not be 100% accurate. You will need to make changes to your captions using the captions editor to ensure that they are compliant. Here’s how:

  1. Go to your My Media gallery and locate the video you want to edit the closed captions.
  2. Select the video to open it in a new screen.
  3. Beneath the video player, select Actions > Caption Requests.

  4. Select EDIT to open the captions editor.

  5. The individual captions lines are displayed on the left side of the editor. Select the caption line you’d like to edit.
  6. You can make changes to the text of each caption line in the window beneath the video player.
  7. Select Save beneath the text window for each line you edit.
  8. When you’ve finish making all of your changes, select Approve to finalize your edits.

Uploading Caption Files

To upload an SRT or DFXP format closed caption file to your video, follow these steps:

  1. Go to your My Media gallery and locate the video to which you want to add captions.
  2. Select the Edit Icon on the right side of the screen.

  4. Select the Upload captions file button.

  5. An Upload a captions file pop-up window will appear.
  6. To select a closed caption file from your computer or mobile device, select the Browse… button.

  7. Search for and select the SRT or DFXP close caption file you want to upload from your computer or mobile device.

  8. Next, use the Language menu to choose the language of the closed caption file. Type in the language chosen in the "Label" field and select "Save" when you're finished.

Deleting Videos from Blackboard

To delete a video from your My Media gallery, follow these steps:

  1. To the far right of the video, select the garbage can icon.

  2. A Delete Confirmation pop-up window will ask: Are you sure you want to delete this media?

  3. If you wish to proceed, select the Delete button. Select Cancel to stop the process.

Adding Videos to your Course

You can add videos to your course from several media galleries. Start by doing the following:

  1. Select Build Content.
  2. From the drop-down menu, select Item.

  3. Type in the Name of the item above the text menu. From the Text menu bar, select Mashups and scroll down and select Kaltura Media.

  4. A new window will appear. Across the top of the window, you will see three tabs:  My Media, Media Gallery, and Shared Repository.

    1. The My Media gallery contains all of the videos you’ve uploaded.
    2. The Media Gallery contains videos assigned to a specific course. Videos can be added by you, authorized users or by students.
    3. The Shared Repository contains videos that can be shared among all faculty members without restrictions and contains a library of hundreds of videos on a wide variety of subjects that you can add to your course.
  5. Choose the video you want to add to your course from any of the galleries by highlighting it and pressing the Select button.

  6. The selected video will now appear as an outlined box in the text window. Select the Submit button at the bottom right of the page to add the video to your course.

  8. If you need to go back and make any changes, select the drop-down menu next to the course item name, and select Edit. Select the Submit button again to save your changes.

Creating Assignments for Student Video Uploads

Students can upload their videos directly to Blackboard once you’ve created an Assignment. Let’s start with the steps to creating an Assignment in your course:

  1. Select Assessments in the top menu, and from the drop-down, select Assignment.

  2. Type in the Name of your assignment. You can also select a Color for the text.

  3. In the Instructions field, type in any instructions you want your students to see regarding the assignment. Here are a few helpful tips to consider including in your instructions:
    1. Request that the student media (video or audio file) be ideally between two to five minutes in length. This will help ensure that the files will upload with fewer technical issues.
    2. We strongly recommend students upload videos while connected to high speed Internet. Slow upload speeds, such as through cellular networks, will make the process take much longer.
    3. Avoid asking students to record documents with personal information (i.e. drivers licenses).
    4. If students experience technical difficulties uploading videos, ask them to contact the student help desk at 972-669-6402.
  4. You can also add Due Dates if you wish. In the Grading section, make sure you type in the maximum number of Possible Points for the Assignment.

  5. Select Submission Details to open the menu, and make sure the Assignment Type is set to Individual Submission if you want each student to submit his/her video individually. You may want change the Number of Attempts to Unlimited Attempts in case there are technical issues with the video upload.

  6. Fill in the rest of the Assignment information as you wish.
  7. Once you’ve completed all the information, select Submit to create the Assignment.

Grading Student Video Uploads

To grade the videos uploaded to a particular assignment in your course, follow these steps:

  1. Select Grade Center in the far left menu, and from the drop-down menu, select Needs Grading.

  2. A window will open that will display all of the ungraded videos. To view the videos, select the student’s name under User Attempt.

  3. Select the video’s Play Icon to watch the video. The video controls will appear at the bottom of the video player.

  4. Select the ATTEMPT field next to the maximum points and type in the grade. Select the Drop Down Arrow below the ATTEMPT field to add comments in the FEEDBACK TO LEARNER box. To finish grading the assignment, select Submit.

Uploading Student Videos to Assignments

Here are instructions on how students can upload videos to an Assignment. The screen shots are from an iPhone, but the process is the same for any model computer or mobile device. You can copy, paste and edit this information in the Instructions field when you create your Assignment.

  1. From the web browser on your computer or mobile device, Login to eCampus using your Username and Password.

  2. In My Courses, select the course you where you want to upload your video.

  4. Under Attach Files, select Browse My Computer to search for the video file you want to upload from computer or mobile device.

  5. Select the video you want to upload.

  6. The video will now appear under Attached files.

  7. You can change the name of your video in the Link Title box. You can also add Comments to your video. When you’re ready to send your video, select Submit.

  8. You’ll receive confirmation when your video is uploaded. Please copy and save your confirmation number as proof of your submission. You’ll also receive notification of the estimated wait time for your video file to be converted. You can also select the Download button to save your converted video to your computer or mobile device.
